Many women want a Pill that offers not only effective pregnancy prevention, but also other benefits, like predictable periods and minimal breakthrough bleeding. The Pill can be can be an option for those who want shorter, lighter or more predictable periods.

Serious as well as minor side effects have been reported with the use of oral contraceptives. Serious risks include blood clots, stroke and heart attacks, and are increased if you smoke. Women who use oral contraceptives are strongly advised not to smoke. Some women should not use the Pill, including women who have blood clots, certain cancers, a history of heart attack or stroke, as well as those who are or may be pregnant.

Of course the Pill does not protect against HIV or sexually transmitted diseases as some women have believed.

The gene in question helps break down fatty acids (Omega-3) from the
diet, which have been linked with brain development. Seven points
difference is enough to put the child in the top third of the class.

There were different results about whether breastfeeding improves IQ
in the past. 90% of people carry the version of the gene which was
associated with better IQ scores in breastfed children.

Previous studies on intelligence and breastfeeding have come up with
conflicting results, probably because the presence or absense of this
gene was not monitored

Since the studies used in the analysis were done, manufacturers have
begun to add fatty acids to formula milk but there have been
inconsistent results on the benefits.

The study did not specify how long babies were breastfed for and it
may be that even breastfeeding for a short period may be beneficial
for intelligence.

Among white and black teens, the pregnancy rate was 49 and 83.5 per 1,000 respectively, in 1996. By 2005 the rate among white teens had dropped to 25 per 1,000 and it was 59.2 per 1,000 for black teens.

Pregnancy rates include tallies of live births, abortions and stillbirths. The numbers are different than birth rates, often used as indicators of teen pregnancy because they are easier to obtain.

Though the teen pregnancy rate in the city has fallen 28 percent in that decade, it remains higher than in the rest of Northern Virginia.

The decline in Alexandria’s rate is not as dramatic as the District’s, where the pregnancy rate for teens 15 to 19 decreased from 204.3 per 1,000 girls in 1995 to 64.4 per 1,000 in 2005.

MPs also rejected calls to lower the 24-week legal limit for an abortion in England, Wales and Scotland.

They said nurses and midwives with suitable training and professional guidance should not be prevented from carrying out all stages of early medical abortions, which involves the use of drugs, and early surgical abortions.

The recommendation was that just one doctor should have to sign a consent form, rather than the two currently required by the Abortion Act.

Abortion remains intensely controversial after 40 years and the figures have continued to rise. In 2006 there were almost 200,000 abortions in England and Wales with a further 13,000 in Scotland

The University of Aberdeen conducted the project in which they quizzed 2,000 mothers-to-be on their eating habits, then looked at their child’s health over five years. Their results were very surprising - that those who ate four or more apples a week were half as likely to have an asthmatic child compared with those who ate one or fewer.

They also found a link between eating more fish in pregnancy, and a lower chance of their child developing the allergic skin condition eczema.

Apples are already linked to better lung health when taken by adults, perhaps due to their antioxidant properties, and oily fish in particular contain Omega-3 oils, which, it has been suggested, offer health benefits.

The project, funded by the charity Asthma UK, has previously revealed links between vitamin consumption in pregnancy and lower levels of asthma.

This time, they feel that while the apparently strong link between apples and asthma does not prove that eating the fruit is the cause of lower asthma rates in children, it does offer a strong argument for a balanced diet during pregnancy.

The report by three U.N. agencies and the World Bank estimated that 536,000 women died due to complications in pregnancy or childbirth in 2005, compared to 576,000 in 1990. 99% of the deaths occurred in developing countries, according to the report.

This UN report called for the prevention of unplanned pregnancies and unsafe abortions to achieve the Millennium Development Goal set by world leaders at a U.N. summit in 2000. It also called for high-quality pregnancy and delivery care.

Another worrying statistic to emerge is that in Africa, less than 50 percent of births are attended by a skilled health worker, 270,000 maternal deaths in 2005 occurred in sub-Saharan Africa, followed by South Asia with 188,000.

The United States had an estimated rate of 11 deaths for every 100,000 births - higher than most European countries and Japan.

How do they work

All home pregnancy test kits detect a hormone known as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in a woman, which is produced by the developing placenta beginning on the day on which the embryo implants in the uterine wall. Concentrations of this pregnancy hormone vary widely from woman to woman, but the more sensitive tests can measure lower levels of hCG.

Consumer Reports test 18 different brands of pregnancy tests to try and figure out which one was the best.

Who won

The CR had this to say -One kit, the First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test, emerged as the most reliable and sensitive test. “It detected hCG at concentrations as low as 6.5 mIU/ml (thousandths of an International Unit per milliliter) - that’s almost sensitive enough to detect any pregnancy soon after implantation. However, when we waited a full 10 minutes before reading the results, seven of the test kits performed much better than they did at the manufacturer’s suggested waiting time.”

In the end, First Response’s Early Result Pregnancy test ($18.09/2 tests) came out on top, with an “Excellent” rating (winning an “excellent” score in hCG sensitivity, “good” in ease of reading, and “excellent” in 10-minute hCG sensitivity, with an overall recommendation of “best combination of sensitivity and reliability). Confirm’s Pregnancy Test ($11.19/2 tests) scored lowest, with a final score of “Poor” (”fair,” hCG sensitivity; “poor,” ease of reading; and “fair,” 10-minute hCG sensitivity, with some samples failing to work properly).

Many researchers have found that social relationships, including
marriage, are associated with better health and less cardiovascular
disease. “The more friends, the better” has been the assumption.

In the survey, those who had high negativity in their marriage or
close friendship, such as saying that talking to the partner or friend
about problems made things seem worse, were 34 percent more likely to
have a heart problem compared with those with more positive
interactions and low level of negativity. The increased risk dropped
to 25 percent after taking into account other variables that could
contribute to heart disease such as depression.

De Vogli’s team found that the link between negative relationships and
heart disease is not “huge.” Still, “this is one study that adds to a
significant database suggesting that negative effect is bad for both
quality of life and for the heart.”
