A number of cough remedies for children under the age of 2 years old have been removed from the shelves of pharmacies.
The action has been taken following fears of accidental overdose.

The remedies are not being removed completely, but will be kept behind the pharmicists counter and should not be administered to
people who wish to treat children under the age of 2 years.

The products which are being removed include

Asda Children’s Chesty Cough Syrup

Calcough Chesty

Boots Chesty Cough Syrup (one year plus)

Children’s Chesty Cough

Boots sore throat and cough linctus (one year plus)

Buttercup infant cough syrup

More remedies which are aimed at the over 2s will be removed until they contain warnings about the dangers
of administering them to children under 2.

It’s a precautionary measure, to avoid dangerous situations where the medicines are used in the wrong quantity
for the wrong age group. It is to avoid overdose especially when they are given to very young children.
This action was taken when it was found many parents were unwittingly overdosing young children with cough
remedies.

Paracetamol and ibuprofen medicines, vapour rubs and simple cough syrup such
as glycerol, honey or lemon are recommended instead of the cough remedies for their young children.

A 14-year-old girl has been awarded £325,000 in damages following the death of her sister 11 years ago
from meningitis. Her sister, Stevi Donovan died after a cardiac arrest in January 1997 when she was only 3 years old.

The death traumatised her twin sister Charlotte to such an extent, the court awarded substantial damages
to her.

Charlotte had hugged her sister as she lay ill at home. She witnessed Stevi deteriorate and visited her in intensive care.
Charlotte was left with a lot of problems including obsessive compulsive disorder.

Dr Millard, an out-of-hours GP, was contacted by the girls mother, Terri, when Stevi appeared unwell. Dr. Millard
said that she probably had a flu. Terri again rang the doctor later on, but again the doctor dismissed it as flu and
did not offer to visit. Later Stevi developed a rash on her body and was experiencing breathing difficulties.
Terri, again called Dr. Millard who advised her to contact the surgery where another GP saw her and called an ambulance.
Stevi died later in hospital.

Dr. Millard admitted breach of duty but had denied this had caused Charlotte’s problems. He agreed if he had visited
Stevi after the second phone call, he should have referred her and, if he had,
she would have survived. He did question as to whether Charlotte would have developed her conditions even if
she had not been through this experience

The settlement of the claim for clinical negligence, was approved by the judge.

The best parenting tips

These are my best ever parenting tips. They have served me well and I hope they will do the same for you.

Make time for your child. We all lead busy lives with jobs to do, bills to pay and people to see.
But stand back for a minute and say “What is the mosdt important thing in my life?”. As a parent that
should be your child, yet how much attention do you set aside without distractions to play or
talk to your child. Allocate some time every week and devote that time to playing and interacting with your child. You
will enjoy it as much as them.

Choose who minds your child very carefully. Research your options, investigate and visit the options you believe
are best for your childcare needs. Your child is ultimately your responsibility. Youmust be confident
that they are under suitable supervision when you are not there.

Calm down before you dish out punishments. If you do it in the heat of the moment you may be exessive and later
roll back on it. Think about it, come up with a fair punishment and implement it. This will show
consistency to your child and will benefit them and you in the long run.

Safety rules. Don’t take shortcuts where safety is concerned. Always use the correct safety in car journeys,
never leave a child unattended in a bath, secure all potentially dangerous objects. We can’t cover
100% of the potential dangerous situations, but if you see something potentially dangerous, do
something about it don’t leave it.

Don’t nit pick. It is so easy after a stressful day to scold your child for the most minor
incidents. Avoid this, count to 10 before flying off the handle and consider is the incident really
worthy of your reaction.

Don’t be over fussy. All children are different, some children don’t like certain foods, don’t force them to eat it.
It can drive them even more against what you are tryinh to push. As long as they generally eat healthily
there is no need to force every good food into them.

Keep emergency supplies. Whether it be medicine, food/snacks or favourite toys keep a spare
supply, so that when your child is most in need, you can calm them down.

Be united as a couple. For couples it is important that you are united in your treatment of your children. Don’t allow
the kids to play one parent off teh other.

Show good example. You are your childs primary teacher, they will follow your lead. Make sure
it is the right lead.

Teach your child. Again make time to explain why things are done a certain way or why certain things happen.
Don’t just impose things on your child tell them why you are doing it.

Keep an eye on yourself. Take time to assess your own performance. Pick one or two areas where you
could have done things better and make those changes in the future.

Trust your instincts they are usually right if sometimes on the over protective side.

Let your child grow. Let them enjoy new experiences, in a safe manner. Don’t try to shield them

Make honesty a priority. Again you are showing your child the correct way of doing things.
You are setting the example. A child will resent doing something if they see that the same
rules do not apply to you.

I suppose the most important tip is to love your kids, follow your instincts and give
them the support to grow.

The first 2 years of a babys life is mapped out in milestones, below is the top 10 milestones to look out for in your babys life.

Eye contact

This is one of the first milestones you’ll notice, and it’s a big deal not just because your baby is finally paying attention to you, and following you with her eyes, but also because it indicates that her neurological growth and ability to communicate are on track.

Social smile

This is one of the nicest milestones.
A social smile is reciprocal, meaning your baby smiles in response to someone else’s smile. It’s a sign that several different parts of the brain are maturing and developing.

Cooing and Gaaing

During your baby’s first several weeks, she communicates mainly by crying. But around 8 weeks, there’s a lot of activity that begins to take place in the brain’s front temporal lobe that lets your baby coo.

Babbling

A bit more advanced than cooing, eventually your baby will move on to babbling. This is different from cooing because it requires using the tongue and the front of the mouth to make sounds.

Reaching and grabbing

To encourage reaching and grabbing, get down on the floor with your baby and place a favorite toy just out of reach. The more opportunities you create, the more you engage her senses and entice her to touch, smell, look, and learn about objects.

Pulling up to a stand

One of the first signs that your baby is getting ready to walk is that he begins to pull himself up to a standing position. This is a sign of their developing stability on their feet.

Pincer grasp

This is actually quite important.
There’s the crude pincer grasp that occurs around 7 or 8 months, when babies use all of their fingers and their thumb to pick up a spoon or toy. Then, a few months later, they refine the skill and, with either hand, very neatly take their thumb and forefinger to pick up one Cheerio or one piece of a puzzle.

Gestures

When your child has eaten all his food and motions with wide-open hands “all gone,” or points to his favorite book on the bookshelf, this is a preverbal form of language - Guesturing

First word

The past months of cooing, babbling, pointing, and gesturing have all been steppingstones to the formation of speech. When your daughter sees a ball and pronounces “ba” or “ball,” her brain is making the connection between that sound and the object.

Pretend play

If you’re looking for a little insight into your own habits, look at your toddler, who will often begin pretend play by imitating you

A study has suggested that older men with lower levels of the male sex hormone testosterone in their
blood may be more prone to depression. women are more likely to be depressed than men until the age of 65,
when the difference between the genders almost disappears.

Testosterone levels decline with age but there are differences among the levels in different men.
.

The study took men who were diagnosed as suffering from depression and
found that they had significantly lower levels of both total testosterone,
and free testosterone.

They found those men whose level of free testosterone was in the bottom
20% were three times more likely to be depressed than those in the top 20%.

The study also found a link between poor health and testosterone levels. This
raises the possibility that men with low testosterone levels may be prone
to depression because they are also more likely to be in poor physical health.

Testosterone therapy offers a relatively simple intervention, potentially,
for some groups of older depressives with hypogonadism (low production of sex
hormoProfessor Stafford Lightman, a hormone expert at the University of Bristol, said testosterone potentially had many small effects which could raise the risk of depression. For instance, low levels had been linked to poor cognitive performance.

It is not expected that low levels of testosterone is the only cause of depression
in older men, but it appears to be a contributory factor.

It is not only available to those who have a weight problem.

The programme builds on the success of the Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it! programme also known as MEND .

The scheme includes a weekly snack-time where parents and children are given new foods to try and parents are thought about food, food labelling and the effects of bad eating habits.

The focus of the new programme would be to encourage all children to a healthier lifestyle by educating the whole family. That way those who are most in need of the programme will have the support of their whole family.

Statistics show that 30% of UK children are now considered to be overweight or obese. The aim of this programme is to catch potential overweight candidates early and prevent possible problems.

The aim is to promote a healthy lifestyle from an early age with the full support of the whole family.

It had to happen. Tracking devices are now being used to monitor the movement of children, convicts, pets, Alzheimer’s patients, and others.

American companies are reportedly working on developing a GPS-enabled chip to track individuals, which could potentially locate a person’s position, speed and direction.

Many parents believe it is their only option if they want to know where their child is at any time, day or night. It would allow parents to know if there child was at school or bunking off. Of course the big drawback is from a civil liberties point of view. What kid would want there parents knowing where they were 24 hours a day.

Parents would almost definitely support such a development. The devices would also have more advantages. It could help to ease parents worries over a child being kidnapped. The question is - Is it too much intrusion into the life of a child

This is not a straight forward matter. The technology exists to allow this to happen now. The debate over whether it should should happen of not will probably last for a very long time.

We have all heard at some point in time about how you could get cancer from doing something that we all do every day. For example, there was a huge amount of debate and there still is about the effects of using a mobile phone frequently. Well this along with some other commonly regarded cancer triggers have been found to be myths.

According to a new study conducted by the University of New South Wales graded certain activities commonly thought to cause cancer on a scale from proven and likely, to inferred, unknown or unlikely.

The study found smokers and smokers who have quit to be the most at risk, although the risk is reduced for people who quit smoking. Drinking alcohol was also a high risk factor, particularly for people who also smoke.

Drinking chlorinated water and using a mobile phone was far less likely to cause cancer although the risks associated with the long-term use of mobile phones had not been fully established

The study also reported that there was little risk from drinking coffee, using deodorants, drinking fluoridated water and having breast implants or dental fillings.

The study also confirmed a number of well known cancer causing activities

A story of trust. Trust of a father who took the harder option but server his son best in the long run.

I came across this story which was first printed in the NY Times in May 1995, couldn’t find the link in the archives, but you can dig it out if you want to.

It’s a man recounting a story when he was a young boy. The man in question is Mell Lazarus, creator of the MOMMA comic strip, and author of a number of novels.

Lazarus recalls an incident when he was nine, back in the late thirties. His family stayed at a boarding house in the Catskills for the summer during school vacations, and he and two buddies were hanging out one August afternoon, bored. So what they decided to do was engage in a little, um, remodeling.

There was a building on the grounds called “the casino,” a small structure where guests enjoyed bingo games and sometimes a cheesy magic act would come through. The boys decided that the building was too new, too pristine with new Sheetrock, and that a little damage would be fun.

One thing led to another, and an entire wall of ‘rock was lying there in ruins.

The owner of the place was furious, told the boys’ mothers, and also told them that he would tell their fathers. The three mothers basically decided to let their husbands discipline the boys. They had really gone too far.

These were busy, working men, who looked forward to the drive upstate for a pleasant long weekend away from the big city with their children. When they began to arrive at the boarding house, the owner was there - and so were the other guests, waiting to see the boys get their comeuppance. The bingo players felt a strong lust for vengeance. They wanted to see some beatings.

As Lazarus tells it, his friends’ fathers came home first, one at a time. The first dad, upon being shown the destruction, took off his belt and began whipping his son (a gesture, Lazarus noted, seemed to be one he’d used many a time before). The second father came home and when he learned what happened, began thrashing his boy, slamming him to the ground and kicking him.

Lazarus was now terrified; his father had never raised his hand in violence, but after seeing this, the young boy was truly afraid that he’d crossed the line.

His father came home, just as the second boy was being dragged into the house by his angry father. The owner explained what had happened. Lazarus’s dad stared at his son for a moment. Then suddenly left. He got back into his car and drove off. He returned an hour later with a stack of Sheetrock boards tied to the top of his car. He took the ‘rock into the remains of the casino, then took a hammer he’d bought at the hardware store out of the front seat, and went to work. He said not a word to anyone; he just rebuilt the casino, taking most of the night to do it.

Lazarus was still worried about retribution in the morning, but none came. The father never mentioned the incident and the weekend went perfectly fine.

Lazarus says that, while he knew his father was angry, the father also believed that beating one’s child is criminal, that children “always remembered the pain but often forgot the reason.” The father also understood that a child learns nothing by humiliation - he was not going to “play into a conspiracy of revenge and spectacle” by publicly flogging his own son. That was not his way.

Did Lazarus ever do something like that again? Probably not. He learned that lesson. But he also learned something truly important: “it was also the day I first understood how deeply I could trust him.”

I am always amazed when I think of this story. The incident took place in the late thirties, when, as Lazarus writes, many fathers (and mothers) “saw corporal punishment of their children as a God-given right.” But this father understood something beyond that spectacle of revenge, the drama that the bloodthirsty bingo players wanted to see enacted. We feel it all the time, that desire for justice. As a sports fan, I know that feeling. But as a father, I want to think something different.

Just as important as the father’s refusal to get into a psychodrama is the fact that he also solves the problem of the destroyed casino. The other fathers, likely just as capable of putting up Sheetrock as Mr. Lazarus was, only deal with their sons. And Mr. Lazarus obviously understood that hitting his son was not going to fix the casino. And that the sound of the hammer banging on Sheetrock not only allowed him to get out some aggression, but also served as a stern reminder to the young boy about what he did to the building

Since its development more than 45 years ago, the Pill has become the single most widely used birth control method. Although more than 80 percent of American women have taken the Pill at some point in their lives, common myths about it persist and many women are still unsure how it works and what it does.

Many women want a Pill that offers not only effective pregnancy prevention, but also other benefits, like predictable periods and minimal breakthrough bleeding. The Pill can be can be an option for those who want shorter, lighter or more predictable periods.

Serious as well as minor side effects have been reported with the use of oral contraceptives. Serious risks include blood clots, stroke and heart attacks, and are increased if you smoke. Women who use oral contraceptives are strongly advised not to smoke. Some women should not use the Pill, including women who have blood clots, certain cancers, a history of heart attack or stroke, as well as those who are or may be pregnant.

Of course the Pill does not protect against HIV or sexually transmitted diseases as some women have believed.

There are a number of Pills available to the modern woman and it may take a few attempts to find the correct Pill for your body and circumstances.
