Home Birth

Home births have become more and more popular in recent times, but, many women still believe it is safer to give birth in the hospital. A home birth certainly means a lot more preparation.

Before you make a decision on having a home birth, talk to your doctor and get information about home birth services offered in your area.

Preparation

Make sure you pack a bag as you would for a hospital delivery. You can plan to have a home birth, but if circumstances don't allow it, you will have to go into hospital.

You may like to have a big sheet of plastic to go over your mattress and old sheets for when you're in labour. Lots of pillows and cushions or beanbags are good to lean over, but cover them with towels, in case it gets stained.

Make sure you know the contact details of the mid-wife who will attend your home birth and their replacement if they are not available.

What will happen?

If you are in doubt as to whether you should ring your midwife or not, then ring - it's better to be safe than sorry.

It's extremely rare for things to happen in midwifery which require that you transfer five minutes ago, but if it does look like that, don't panic. Use your breathing to keep calm, and listen to what's being said. Midwives are trained to deal with emergencies and will do just that, while they keep you and your partner informed.

What you should consider before deciding to have a home birth?

  • Is it a safe option for you?
  • You may have to transfer at any time up until the baby is born. Are you prepared for that?
  • Are you clear on the midwife's role. What they can and can't do?
  • How far from the hospital do you live?
  • How far away does your midwife live?
  • Why do you want to have a home birth? You should be commited to a home birth for the right reasons.
